Insurance industry faces challenges scaling AI implementation
The insurance industry is transitioning from experimenting with artificial intelligence to attempting large-scale implementation. A Deloitte survey of 200 insurance executives in the United States revealed that 76% have already integrated generative AI into at least one business function, covering areas such as underwriting, risk assessment, claims management, and customer service.
Despite this adoption, moving from proof-of-concept to full-scale operational integration remains a significant hurdle. This challenge is compounded by economic pressures; the Swiss Re Institute projects that global premium growth will slow to 1.3% in real terms by 2026, down from 3.9% in 2025.
Furthermore, venture capital in the insurtech sector has become more selective. While insurance startups raised nearly $3.9 billion in 2025, this figure is less than a quarter of the funding seen during the 2021 peak. Current investment is increasingly focused on infrastructure and AI-driven automation for core processes like underwriting and risk assessment.
