Insurance industry faces rising claim complexity and AI integration
The insurance industry is navigating a shift in how artificial intelligence and human expertise interact. While claim frequency in areas like workers’ compensation has trended downward, the complexity of individual claims is rising. Professionals face an increased information load due to specialized medical care, evolving regulations, and the integration of behavioral health considerations.
A survey by the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America reveals that consumers still place high value on human interaction. Approximately 87% of respondents stated that having a human agent is important when making insurance decisions, and over half prefer human agents when filing major claims. Only 6% of surveyed consumers expressed comfort in relying solely on AI.
Despite this preference for human guidance, there is significant openness to technology. About 61% of consumers prefer agents who utilize AI to tailor coverage and increase efficiency. Many view AI as a valuable tool for comparison shopping, answering general questions, and providing claims status updates, provided that human professionals remain involved in the process.
