INTA research identifies forage beet as viable winter feed for steers
Research conducted by the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA) in Argentina suggests that using forage beet for direct grazing is a viable alternative for finishing steers during winter in the irrigated valleys of Northern Patagonia.
The study found that beef from animals fed with this crop contained more than double the concentration of omega-3 fatty acids compared to those fed with corn. While the meat was slightly darker and firmer, researchers noted the quality remains comparable to pastoral systems and within acceptable consumer parameters.
This method offers a lower feeding cost than corn-based feedlot diets and provides a way to produce meat during periods when forage resources are scarce. Experts emphasize that while these initial results are promising for human health and production efficiency, further evaluations are required.
