Argentina study: Urease inhibitors reduce nitrogen loss in corn
A study conducted by the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (Inta) in the Paraná region of Argentina indicates that urease inhibitors can significantly reduce nitrogen loss in corn crops.
During two consecutive corn harvests (2024/25 and 2025/26), researchers compared conventional urea with a treated formulation designed to slow ammonia volatilization. The study found that conventional urea lost between 13% and 20% of applied nitrogen to the atmosphere. In contrast, the formulation using a urease inhibitor limited these losses to between 5% and 7%.
By slowing the enzyme-driven transformation of urea into ammonia, the inhibitor allows more time for the fertilizer to be incorporated into the soil by rainfall, making the nutrients more available to corn roots.
