INTA to implement integrated forest-livestock management plans in Argentina
The National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA) is providing technical assistance to develop 40 Integrated Forest-Livestock Management (MBGI) plans across 12 Argentine provinces. This initiative aims to strengthen livestock production through practices that conserve biodiversity and ecosystem services while reducing deforestation and forest degradation.
The project is part of Argentina’s REDD+ Results-Based Payment Project, implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the National Secretariat of Environment. It is funded by the Green Climate Fund with a total of US$ 82 million. Of this, approximately US$ 4.4 million is specifically allocated to the technical formulation and on-site implementation of these 40 management plans.
The MBGI approach promotes systems where livestock production and native forest use coexist sustainably. Key benefits include improved carbon sequestration, increased resilience to drought, and compliance with international environmental standards for forest and livestock exports. The geographic scope includes provinces such as Santa Fe, Santiago del Estero, Chubut, Salta, Buenos Aires, La Rioja, Río Negro, Jujuy, Tucumán, Corrientes, Córdoba, and Neuquén.
