INTEC study finds 52% of vulnerable pregnant women in Los Mina consumed alcohol

A study presented at the Second Annual Psychology Congress of the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) revealed that 52% of a sample of 100 pregnant women in socially vulnerable conditions at the Los Mina Maternity Hospital consumed alcohol during pregnancy.

Presented by clinical psychologist and neuropsychologist María Eugenia Portela, the research analyzed factors associated with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). Key risk factors identified include alcohol consumption during the first trimester, maternal malnutrition, polysubstance use, concentrated consumption episodes, socioeconomic conditions, and the presence of alcoholism within the family environment.
