Integration strategies for IT and OT systems in manufacturing
Integrating Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT) is essential for connecting production systems without creating data silos. Effective integration requires selecting specific processes, identifying source systems for information, and standardizing order and batch designations.
Successful implementation involves documenting connections to ensure long-term maintenance and defining how production data, such as order numbers and completed quantities, is verified within ERP systems. The primary goal is to enable data utility without the need for manual re-entry or repetitive explanations of data meanings.
OT encompasses the hardware and software used to monitor or control physical processes, such as PLC controllers and SCADA systems. Because OT is directly involved in machine operations, integration must prioritize process continuity and security. IT manages information exchange, often utilizing ERP systems for resource planning and material management, while MES (Manufacturing Execution Systems) can serve as a bridge for data from the factory floor.
