Integrative medicine combines conventional and complementary care
Integrative medicine (IM) is an approach that combines conventional mainstream medical treatments with complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) to provide patient-centered care. Rather than replacing orthodox medicine, IM seeks to use both methods purposefully, often utilizing mainstream medicine for crisis intervention and diagnosis while employing alternative methods like acupuncture, nutrition therapy, and meditation for prevention and health maintenance.
This approach emphasizes the patient-physician relationship, encouraging patient participation and self-management. Key focus areas include physical health, mental and emotional resilience, lifestyle, and social environment. By prioritizing prevention and lifestyle changes, integrative medicine aims to improve quality of life and support healthcare systems facing growing demands and limited personnel capacity. The World Health Organization has also noted the importance of complementary care in achieving affordable healthcare.
