Intel CEO reports 50% supply capacity amid surging AI CPU demand
Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan announced at the Splunk.conf26 conference that the company is currently meeting only about 50% of customer demand for its processors. This shortage is driven by an explosion in demand for central processing units (CPUs) required for AI inference, as CPUs act as the essential coordinators for distributed systems and AI agents running on GPUs.
Tan also issued a warning regarding global supply chain vulnerabilities, noting that the industry relies heavily on a single provider for advanced AI chip manufacturing. He highlighted the risk of having a vast majority of cutting-edge production concentrated with TSMC. To mitigate these risks, Intel is positioning itself as a comprehensive provider of chip design, wafer manufacturing, and advanced packaging, utilizing its 14A process and EMIB technology.
Despite challenges in yield and substrate capacity bottlenecks, Intel reported significant momentum in its data center and AI segments. The company has also secured agreements for its 14A process with entities such as Tesla and SpaceX, with products expected by mid-2028.
