Intel enhances Linux support for Nova Lake and Granite Rapids

Intel is enhancing its hardware support and performance within the Linux ecosystem through architectural updates and software optimizations.

For the upcoming Nova Lake-S and Nova Lake-P processor families, Intel is introducing Single Root I/O Virtualization (SR-IOV) support for integrated graphics. Working alongside the modern Xe graphics driver, this feature allows a single integrated GPU to be partitioned into multiple independent virtual interfaces. This enables direct hardware access for multiple virtual machines simultaneously, providing near-native graphics performance without the need for dedicated hardware or slow emulation. This change is expected to be integrated into the Linux kernel, likely around the version 7.5 cycle.

Additionally, recent performance benchmarks show significant gains for Intel’s Granite Rapids platform, specifically the Xeon 6980P processors. Following a year of continuous optimizations to the Linux kernel, compilers, and system libraries, the hardware is now achieving much higher efficiency on modern distributions like Ubuntu. These software-driven improvements allow existing server environments to handle intensive computational tasks more effectively without requiring hardware upgrades.
