Intel submits 44 Linux kernel patches for HDMI 2.1 support

Intel has submitted a series of 44 patches to the Linux kernel developers to implement HDMI 2.1 Fixed Rate Link (FRL) support. This development targets Meteor Lake and newer Intel architectures, such as Panther Lake.

FRL is a critical component of the HDMI 2.1 specification, replacing the older TMDS method to allow for higher data rates up to 48 Gbit/s. This enables high-resolution outputs like 4K at 120 Hz, which have been limited on Linux systems using Intel integrated graphics. While testing on Panther Lake has successfully demonstrated 4K at 120 Hz, the current implementation does not yet include Display Stream Compression (DSC), meaning 8K resolution support remains unavailable for now.

Intel developer Ankit Nautiyal noted that the submission is a "work in progress" intended to establish the foundational design for review. This move follows a period of inactivity regarding similar proposals submitted in late 2022 and addresses long-standing technical barriers involving proprietary specification details maintained by the HDMI Forum.
