Intel unveils Crescent Island AI GPU with up to 480 GB memory
Intel announced its new AI‑focused GPU, code‑named Crescent Island, built on the Celestial Xe3P architecture. The PCIe card ships with 160 GB of LPDDR5X memory and can be expanded to a maximum of 480 GB using additional 24 GB modules, delivering a bandwidth of 684 GB/s. Designed for token‑per‑watt efficiency, the 350 W GPU supports FP4 through FP64 precision and targets both inference and high‑performance AI training workloads.
The solution uses air cooling and can be clustered in server racks, enabling terabytes of GPU memory per rack (up to 3.8 TB with eight cards). Intel markets the product as a lower‑cost alternative to Nvidia’s high‑end AI GPUs, which rely on more expensive GDDR6 or HBM4 memory. Software tools and an open ecosystem are promised to help developers exploit the large memory capacity for massive large‑language‑model training.
