Intellectual debate intensifies over leftism and woke culture

Intellectual debates regarding the distinction between the political left and 'woke' culture are gaining traction in Italy. Analysis of Susan Neiman’s work suggests that while the left is traditionally rooted in universalism—the recognition of shared human rights and dignity—woke culture is characterized by tribalism, which focuses on identity through sex, ethnicity, or religion.

Professor Ginevra Cerrina Feroni, author of ‘Il pensiero conforme’, argues that the Italian intellectual left has largely embraced political correctness as a core component of its identity. She suggests that recent attempts by political figures to distance themselves from woke ideology may be superficial or strategic rather than a sincere critical revision.
