Intellectual Property Office reports 32% rise in crime referrals

The Intellectual Property Office reported a 32% increase in the number of individuals referred to prosecutors for intellectual property crimes during the first half of 2026. A total of 347 suspects were referred, up from 262 during the same period last year.

Technology crimes, including patent, utility model, and trade secret violations, saw 161 individuals referred to prosecutors, a 33% increase. Design infringement showed the most significant growth, rising 137%. Notable enforcement actions included the prevention of overseas leaks of national core technologies, such as all-solid-state battery development information, and the first arrest in a product shape imitation case involving eyewear.

Counterfeit goods crimes also rose by 32%, with 186 individuals referred to prosecutors. Authorities seized 44,482 counterfeit items valued at approximately 61.98 billion won. Enforcement efforts focused on tourist areas and K-pop merchandise to combat the rise in imitation goods.

Data indicates that 62% of victims were small and medium-sized enterprises, while 33% were individuals. In response to the increasing complexity and organization of these crimes, the Intellectual Property Office expanded its investigative workforce from 52 to 86 personnel in June.
