Intellectual property rights and corporate legal protections
Intellectual property (IP) encompasses the creative works and inventions of individuals or groups. In the creative industries, such as writing, arts, and publishing, these rights are often referred to as copyrights. Legal protection typically begins the moment a work is created, and unauthorized use, copying, or passing off another person's work as one's own constitutes intellectual theft.
In a corporate context, intangible assets like brand names, proprietary software, and unique product designs represent significant market value. To prevent competitors from exploiting innovations, corporate lawyers establish protection frameworks. These include registering trademarks for business names and logos to prevent market dilution, and drafting non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) to safeguard trade secrets, software algorithms, and manufacturing formulas.
