Intelligent Railway Summit to explore AI and digital technology in UK rail

Intelligent Transport Systems UK (ITS UK), the Railway Industry Association (RIA), and Cognizant have announced the Intelligent Railway Summit. Scheduled for 7 October in London, the one-day conference aims to explore how data, artificial intelligence, and digital technology can transform the rail sector during its current period of structural reform.

The event will host representatives from the Department for Transport, Great British Railways (GBR), the Office of Rail and Road (ORR), and various train operators. To support emerging innovators, the summit will provide fully funded exhibition spaces for up to six small businesses.

Industry discussions emphasize the necessity of building strong operational foundations to support AI. Experts note that while AI offers significant potential, its effectiveness depends on addressing fragmented systems, manual workflows, and data quality issues. As the industry moves toward consolidation under GBR, ensuring that underlying processes and data structures are ready for large-scale AI implementation remains a critical challenge.
