Intensive four-day OCD treatment shows high remission rates in clinical trials

A randomized trial conducted at University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf in Germany found that a four-day intensive treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) significantly outperformed unguided online therapy. The study, involving 119 adults, reported a remission rate of 42.1% for the intensive group compared to 13.6% for the online group after three months. The intensive approach, known as the Bergen 4-Day Treatment, utilizes concentrated exposure and response prevention in a group setting.

Complementary research from the University of Bergen investigated the biological mechanisms behind these treatment responses. By analyzing saliva samples from approximately 900 patients undergoing the Bergen 4-Day Treatment in Norway, researchers identified DNA methylation patterns associated with how individuals respond to psychotherapy. These epigenetic markers were linked to genes involved in brain plasticity, stress responses, and immune function, suggesting potential for using biological markers to predict treatment success.
