Inter-American Court of Human Rights issues rulings in Argentina and Ecuador

The Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) has issued significant rulings affecting Argentina and Ecuador, involving long-standing legal and human rights disputes.

In Argentina, one year has passed since the IACHR condemned the state regarding the forced disappearance and murder of police informants José Segundo Zambrano and Pablo Marcelo Rodríguez in Mendoza. The 2025 ruling addressed a 25-year cycle of flawed investigations into the 2000 executions. Reparation measures, including indemnities, began following the formal publication of the sentence in December. New federal investigations are being opened to attempt to recover the original case files.

In Ecuador, former President Jamil Mahuad has petitioned the IACHR to review his previous conviction for peculation. The legal dispute centers on the 2000 freezing of bank deposits via Decree 685. While Mahuad was provisionally dismissed in 2006, he was later convicted in 2014. The petition questions the legal basis of the conviction and alleges political influence in the reopening of the trial, citing past statements regarding the judicial process.
