Inter-American Court to examine Venezuela human rights case

The Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) is set to hold a public hearing regarding the Trujillo et al. vs. Venezuela case. The hearing, scheduled for October 14, 2026, in San José, Costa Rica, will examine the international responsibility of the Venezuelan State for human rights violations occurring during the events of April 11, 2002.

During those events, 19 people were killed and more than 300 were wounded by gunfire during anti-government protests. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights previously concluded that the Venezuelan State violated rights to life, personal integrity, assembly, and judicial protections. The Commission also noted that the State failed to prove that the use of lethal force was legitimate, necessary, or proportionate, and that investigations failed to identify or punish those responsible.

Representatives from the NGO Foro Penal, including Alfredo Romero and Gonzalo Himiob, will participate in the hearing. The proceedings will address the merits of the case and potential reparations for the victims and their families, who have sought justice for nearly 25 years.
