Inter-American Development Bank estimates $576 billion for Chilean reconstruction
The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) estimates that $576 billion will be required to reconstruct the Coquimbo and Atacama regions following severe storms in July and August 2026. According to a diagnostic report, the majority of these funds are expected to be deployed during 2027, focusing on public infrastructure, housing recovery, and urban rehabilitation.
Coquimbo is projected to receive approximately 67% of the resources, while Atacama will require the remaining 33%. The Ministries of Public Works and Housing are expected to account for 91% of the total reconstruction costs. Planned works include repairs to roads, bridges, rural drinking water systems, and public spaces, alongside housing solutions for affected families.
Currently, approximately $69.5 billion is being utilized for emergency measures and initial rehabilitation throughout 2026. While the diagnostic provides a framework for coordinating investments, authorities must still define specific priorities, financing, and timelines for the recovery process.
