SIP holds 82nd General Assembly in Bogotá to defend press freedom

The Inter-American Press Association (SIP) has convened its 82nd General Assembly in Bogotá, Colombia, to address critical challenges facing independent journalism. SIP President Pierre Manigault warned of a global deterioration in press freedom, noting that even established democracies face setbacks through violence against journalists, information restrictions, and the use of legal actions to intimidate the media.

During the assembly, several prestigious awards were presented. The New York Times received the SIP Press Freedom Grand Prize, recognizing its 170-year history of editorial independence and rigorous investigation. Additionally, the Fundación Gabo was honored with the 2026 Gran Amigo de la Prensa award for its contributions to journalistic excellence and professional training in Latin America.

Discussions also focused on the technological evolution of the industry. Experts highlighted the necessity for newsrooms to adapt to mobile consumption and the integration of artificial intelligence, emphasizing that while AI can assist in news distribution, it cannot replace the core investigative responsibilities of journalists.
