Inter American Press Association joins SPUR Coalition to protect media content from AI

The Inter American Press Association (SIP) and six major media organizations from Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Chile, and Peru have joined the SPUR Coalition (Standards for Publisher Usage Rights). This international alliance aims to develop technical standards and tools that allow publishers to control, measure, and manage how their journalistic content is utilized by artificial intelligence systems.

By joining the coalition, these Latin American entities become pioneers in the region, ensuring that the perspectives of media outlets in the Americas are included in global discussions regarding AI. The initiative seeks to address challenges related to intellectual property and the economic sustainability of journalism by improving traceability, attribution, and licensing mechanisms for editorial content used by AI technologies.

The SPUR Coalition was originally driven by organizations such as the BBC, Financial Times, Guardian Media Group, Sky News, and Telegraph Media Group, with later additions including The Associated Press and Mediahuis. In June, the coalition released its Content Telemetry Standard to provide editors with information regarding the use of their content by AI systems.
