Inter-American Press Association urges Mexico's INE to respect political satire
The Inter-American Press Association (SIP) has urged Mexico’s National Electoral Institute (INE) to protect freedom of the press and political satire following a complaint by the Morena party. The political party requested that the INE remove and suspend content related to ‘La casa de los Mañosos’, an AI-generated political satire that parodies Mexican politicians.
While the satire was produced by third parties, TV Azteca broadcasted segments of it during its news programs. TV Azteca has stated it will continue to investigate and question those in power.
Pierre Manigault, president of the SIP, noted that the case raises questions regarding the limits of electoral authority intervention against satirical and critical content involving public officials. He emphasized that political humor and criticism are essential to democratic debate and should not be subject to institutional censorship, even when uncomfortable for those in power.
