Inter-American Press Society warns of US press freedom regression
The Inter-American Press Society (SIP) warned at the opening of its SIPConnect 2026 conference in Miami that press freedom in the United States is experiencing a serious regression. SIP executive director Carlos Lauría said the country is no longer immune to a regional trend of growing pressures on journalists, citing lawsuits, hostile rhetoric, attempts to discredit independent reporting and restrictions on information access.
The organization referenced recent incidents, including a July subpoena issued to four New York Times reporters over alleged Secret Service concerns about a Qatari‑donated presidential aircraft, and the detention by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement of Venezuelan journalist Wilmer Solano in Miami Beach despite his pending asylum request. The conference also covered topics such as artificial intelligence, audience evolution and sustainable media models, with participation from executives of YouTube, Axios, TelevisaUnivision, Infobae and a joint Google News Initiative AI Video Lab project. SIP represents more than 1,300 media outlets across the Americas.
