Lionel Messi scores four in Inter Miami's 7-1 win over CF Montreal
Lionel Messi led Inter Miami to a dominant 7-1 victory over CF Montreal, scoring four goals and providing one assist. The 39-year-old Argentine set a new MLS record by becoming the fastest player to record 20 matches with multiple goals, achieving the feat in just 72 games. His performance also moved him to the top of the MLS scoring charts with 18 goals this season.
Amidst this on-field success, Inter Miami announced a coaching change. Cristian “Kily” González has been appointed as the new head coach, replacing interim manager Guillermo Hoyos. Hoyos, who had been leading the team following the departure of Javier Mascherano, clarified that the decision to hire González was an institutional move and not a direct request from Messi, though he acknowledged the natural influence of a player of Messi’s stature.
González, a former teammate of Messi on the Argentine national team, will take over once his work authorization is finalized. The coaching transition comes as Inter Miami seeks to improve its defensive consistency and climb the Eastern Conference standings, currently sitting in second place.
