Inter Milan coach Chivu cites illness for derby loss against Milan

Inter Milan head coach Cristian Chivu attributed his team’s 1:3 defeat in the Derby della Madonnina to a sudden flu epidemic within the squad. Chivu reported that several players, including Bonny and Pio Esposito, suffered from fever and vomiting, forcing him to abandon the team’s standard 3-5-2 formation in favor of an improvised 3-4-2-1 system.

Despite the medical emergencies, Chivu criticized the team’s tactical approach and lack of determination, stating that the squad lacked the “cattiveria” (aggression) shown in previous seasons. The loss marks Chivu’s third consecutive derby defeat, a statistic shared by only two other managers in Serie A history.

Following the match, Inter supporters expressed significant frustration, displaying banners criticizing the players for failing to greet the fans after the game. The defeat has also sparked discussions regarding potential January transfer moves to bolster the attacking options, with reports suggesting interest in returning striker Mauro Icardi.
