Interfor shifts headquarters from Canada to Georgia amid industry challenges

Interfor Corp., one of British Columbia's largest forestry companies, announced it will relocate its corporate support hub from Burnaby, BC to Peachtree City near Atlanta, Georgia. The move was outlined in a memo from CEO Ian Fillinger and confirmed by the company's spokesperson.

Union leader Jeff Bromley of the United Steelworkers Wood Council said the relocation reflects a broader trend of BC forest firms moving operations south, noting that about 62% of Interfor's activities are already in the United States and that high U.S. tariffs have pressured the business. The shift comes as the BC softwood lumber sector faces prolonged difficulties, including recent mill closures and a lack of targeted federal relief.

Industry observers see the headquarters move as a sign of the sector's declining competitive position in Canada and an indication that major forest‑product companies are increasing their U.S. footprint.
