Interior design projects highlight space optimization in Rome and Milan
Recent architectural projects in Italy demonstrate diverse approaches to modernizing historic residential spaces. In Rome, architect Raffaella Falbo completed a renovation of a 130-square-meter apartment in the Della Vittoria district. The project focused on balancing the preservation of 1930s architectural elements—such as terrazzo floors, herringbone parquet, and original ceiling moldings—with a contemporary redistribution of space. A key feature of the design was the transformation of a long, oppressive corridor into a fluid area using mirrors and strategic lighting.
In Milan, Studio EX from Turin implemented a minimalist, multifunctional approach to a 1960s-era apartment. To accommodate a growing family and remote work needs, the designers created a central multifunctional volume. This compact unit integrates the kitchen, laundry, a folding guest bed, a workspace, and storage. The design utilizes sliding panels and curtains to modulate privacy and light, while restoring original materials like terrazzo to maintain a connection to the building’s history.
