Interior design shifts focus toward emotional wellbeing and biophilic principles

Residential interior design is shifting its focus from purely aesthetic trends toward enhancing emotional wellbeing and facilitating daily routines. As homes increasingly serve multiple functions—including work, study, and rest—designers are prioritizing environments that reduce sensory overload and promote relaxation.

According to a 2025 report from the Spanish Red Cross, 30% of the population in Spain experiences low levels of emotional wellbeing. In response, experts suggest that elements such as lighting, acoustics, spatial distribution, and visual order can help create more calming environments.

Biophilic design principles, specifically the use of color, play a significant role in this transition. Utilizing low-saturation tones inspired by nature—such as deep greens, earth tones, and mineral pigments—can help regulate the nervous system. For instance, deep greens may help reduce stress by promoting alpha brain waves, while terracotta tones can provide a sense of stability and security, aiding in better sleep quality.
