Interior design strategies for lighting and color perception
Interior design techniques can significantly alter the perception and character of a living space through the strategic use of lighting and color.
Lighting can serve as an artistic tool to define a room's personality. Using disruptive shapes and materials can create a focal point, especially when placed in natural sightlines such as above a coffee table. Complementing a main piece with indirect secondary lighting, like LED strips, can add depth without creating visual competition.
Color application on walls and ceilings also modifies spatial perception. Using light colors on both walls and ceilings can make a room appear larger by blurring visual boundaries. Conversely, dark ceilings or dark colors on short walls can make a space feel more compact or lower. The visual system perceives these changes based on contrast; eliminating edges through uniform light tones causes the brain to overestimate space, while strong contrasts help the eye calculate depth and distance.
