Interior design trends focus on the ceiling as the ‘fifth wall’
Interior design trends are increasingly focusing on the ceiling, often referred to as the ‘fifth wall’, to create more immersive living spaces. One emerging technique is the evolution of ‘color drenching’, where a single color is applied to walls and architectural features to blur boundaries and make rooms feel more cocooning.
Designers are now experimenting with high-gloss paint finishes on ceilings to add dimension. While traditional color drenching uses matte or satin finishes, a glossy ceiling can reflect light, alter shadows, and create a sense of lightness and contrast even when using the same color as the walls.
Other bedroom ceiling design ideas include using dark paint to make white walls appear brighter and create the illusion of height, installing decorative plaster medallions, or creating immersive effects such as faux night skies using LED lighting and textured materials.
