Interior Health faces specialist exodus in British Columbia

Members of the South Okanagan medical community have issued an open letter accusing Interior Health of driving away essential specialists. Three neurologists at Penticton Regional Hospital have filed resignation papers, citing a new requirement to provide expanded after-hours on-call coverage beyond the South Okanagan without additional compensation. These neurologists are expected to complete their tenure in November and December.

The letter notes that additional neurologists have also resigned in Kamloops and Vernon. This follows a pattern of specialist departures within the region; in 2025, four psychiatrists resigned from Vernon Hospital and seven obstetrician-gynecologists left Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops. Additionally, the pediatrics ward at Kelowna General Hospital experienced a months-long closure in 2025 due to staffing shortages.

Physicians stated they do not oppose regional collaboration but demand consultation to ensure safe and effective planning. Interior Health declined to comment on specific continuity of care measures, citing an interregnum during an ongoing election, but noted that patients requiring neurological care are initially assessed by emergency physicians.
