Interior Health reverses decision to close Trail medical lab

Interior Health has reversed its decision to close the outpatient laboratory at the Trail Health Centre, opting to keep the downtown facility open permanently. The original plan to consolidate laboratory services at Waneta Plaza and Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital faced significant opposition from local physicians, municipal leaders, and residents.

Critics argued that closing the downtown location would create barriers for seniors, vulnerable patients, and individuals with limited transportation. Following consultations with community stakeholders, Interior Health acknowledged the facility’s critical role in the local healthcare ecosystem.

To address regional staffing challenges and ensure long-term sustainability, Interior Health is partnering with Selkirk College to launch a new medical laboratory assistant program at the Trail campus. This initiative aims to create a steady pipeline of qualified professionals for the facility.
