Intermarché launches AI‑powered connected shopping carts in Provins

Intermarché in Provins, Seine‑et‑Marne, has equipped traditional supermarket carts with AI‑enabled devices supplied by the startup Shopic. The retrofit adds a touchscreen, a scanner and two cameras that use computer‑vision technology to automatically identify products by brand, weight and price as they are placed in the cart. The system displays the purchase total in real time, shows applicable promotions and lets customers settle the bill at a dedicated kiosk or directly via their smartphones, eliminating the need to empty the cart at checkout.

The deployment is presented as a way to speed up the shopping process and improve budget management for consumers, while also reducing reliance on cashiers. Retail analysts see the move as part of a broader shift in French supermarkets toward AI‑driven, cashier‑less retail experiences, with potential new jobs in customer assistance and in‑store technology management.
