Intermarché overhauls private‑label recipes after food‑app pressure
French supermarket chain Intermarché announced that since 2017 it has revised more than 3,000 private‑label product recipes and eliminated 160 food additives. The changes were prompted by growing consumer reliance on mobile food‑evaluation apps such as Yuka, which scan barcodes and display health scores using systems like the Traffic Light and Nutri‑Score. These digital tools are extending beyond food to cosmetics and personal‑care items, shaping both shopping choices and manufacturers’ formulations. Health experts acknowledge that while AI‑driven apps can educate shoppers, their recommendations must be based on peer‑reviewed scientific studies, transparent algorithms and independent validation. The expanding trust in such apps is influencing industry practices and consumer behavior across Europe.
