Intermarché union disputes layoffs at Liège location

The CNE union has raised alarms regarding labor conditions and alleged unlawful dismissals at an Intermarché supermarket on Avenue Blonden in Liège, Belgium. The union reports that more than ten employees, many with significant seniority, were laid off within a sixty-day period.

According to the CNE, the employer failed to comply with legal procedures regarding collective dismissals. The dispute is linked to the transition of former Mestdagh Group branches to independent franchise status under Intermarché three years ago, a move unions have criticized for potentially allowing owners to circumvent collective bargaining rules.

The business owner, who operates three Intermarché locations in the region, denies the allegations and stated he is available to inspection authorities. Intermarché’s Belgian management also rejected the claims, maintaining that its franchisees operate with complete autonomy.
