Intermittent fasting efficacy debated by scientific researchers
Scientific debate is intensifying regarding the efficacy of intermittent fasting. While the practice is popular for weight loss and claims of cellular renewal through autophagy, researchers note that human results often fall short of the dramatic benefits observed in animal studies.
In rodents, fasting has been shown to slow aging and prevent obesity. However, due to higher metabolic rates, a 16-hour fast in mice is biologically comparable to several days of fasting in humans. Clinical studies in humans show an average weight loss of approximately 5 percent, a result similar to standard calorie-restricted diets.
Significant challenges remain in nutritional research, primarily due to inaccurate self-reporting. Studies indicate that roughly 30 percent of participants underreport their caloric intake. To combat this, scientists are exploring new monitoring technologies, such as smart forks and dental sensors, to obtain more precise data.
