Intermittent fasting matches calorie restriction for weight loss, study finds

Recent research highlights that losing weight is not solely about counting calories. Experts note that diet quality and the metabolic effects of different foods play a crucial role, and a lawsuit over protein bar labeling has underscored the complexity of calorie estimates.

A clinical trial by the University of Adelaide involving more than 200 adults with obesity showed that intermittent fasting produced average weight loss of about 7 kg, comparable to continuous calorie restriction, while participants reported less mental effort and lower need for constant calorie tracking. The study suggests that intermittent fasting may be a viable, easier-to‑maintain alternative for many people seeking weight loss.

In a separate investigation, researchers from the University of the Sunshine Coast examined how a mother's diet influences immune‑related components in breast milk. They found modest links between dietary patterns and certain chemokines, indicating a subtle effect of maternal nutrition on infant immune development.
