Internacional wins Copa São Paulo de Futebol Júnior in historic final
Internacional secured its fifth Copa São Paulo de Futebol Júnior title following a historic final against Grêmio on January 25, 2020, at the Pacaembu Stadium. This match marked the only time in the tournament's history that the final was decided by a ‘Gre-Nal’ derby.
The match ended in a 1-1 draw during regulation time. Grêmio initially took the lead through a controversial own goal by Thiago Barbosa, but Guilherme Pato quickly equalized for Internacional. In the penalty shootout, Internacional converted three of four attempts, while Grêmio struggled, hitting the crossbar twice and the post once, resulting in only one successful conversion.
This victory added to Internacional's championship history, which includes titles from 1974, 1978, 1980, 1998, and 2020. Grêmio remains without a title in this competition, having finished as runner-up in 1991 and 2020. Corinthians holds the record for the most titles in the tournament with 11.
