Internal medicine specialists play key role in Spanish oncology care

A study titled ‘Activity of the internist in the assistance of the oncological patient in Spain 2025’, published in the Revista Clínica Española (RCE), highlights the essential role of internal medicine specialists in caring for patients with solid organ tumors.

The research indicates that in 65% of medical centers in Spain, oncology patients are admitted to hospital wards where internal medicine doctors are present. This high level of involvement supports calls for internists to be formally recognized as a structural component of cancer care and as active members of multidisciplinary teams.

Dr. Adrián García Villa, a specialist at Hospital Virgen del Puerto, noted that internal medicine provides an integrative clinical approach and ensures continuity of care during hospitalization. Internists act as reference physicians, coordinating with oncologists and other specialists to manage the increasing complexity of cancer patients.
