Internal migration in Italy shows significant movement from South to North
Recent Istat data reveals a significant demographic shift in Italy, with approximately 112,000 people moving from the Mezzogiorno (South) to the Center-North in 2025, while 67,000 moved in the opposite direction. This results in a net loss of about 45,000 residents from the southern regions.
Basilicata reports the most unfavorable internal migration rate in the country. Additionally, 29% of those leaving the Mezzogiorno for central and northern regions originate from Campania.
The migration is driven by a lack of adequate conditions for young people to build professional and personal lives, including needs for dignified work, proper training, efficient services, housing, and infrastructure such as healthcare, education, transport, and digital connectivity.
