Colombia earthquake triggers massive international aid response

A magnitude 7.4 earthquake in Colombia has caused widespread devastation, leaving at least 287 people dead, over 4,000 injured, and approximately 27,000 homes destroyed. The disaster has triggered a massive international humanitarian response.

The United States has committed $26.5 million for reconstruction and dispatched 10 tons of essential supplies, including water and sanitation kits. Other international contributors include China, Germany, India, Paraguay, and Guatemala, among others. European nations such as Italy, Spain, Sweden, and Luxembourg have also provided significant financial aid and supplies.

Domestically, the city of Valledupar has collected over 15 tons of aid through local initiatives. However, the crisis has also sparked political tension; in Cali, Mayor Alejandro Éder faced violent protests and physical hostility from citizens frustrated by nighttime curfews and the perceived slow pace of the official emergency response.
