Maiquetía Airport to resume commercial flights following Venezuelan earthquakes
Maiquetía International Airport in Venezuela is set to resume commercial operations on September 1, 2026, using temporary terminals following structural damage from major earthquakes on June 24. The seismic events, which included magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, resulted in at least 6,509 deaths and forced the closure of the country's primary aviation hub.
Several international airlines have announced the resumption of services. Avianca will restart daily flights between Bogotá and Caracas, while also launching a new daily route between Bogotá and Maracaibo. Copa Airlines will return to its full schedule in Venezuela, including the Panama City-Caracas route. Air Europa will also resume operations to Caracas on September 1. American Airlines has scheduled the restart of its Miami-Caracas service for September 3, with two daily frequencies.
The Institute of Maiquetía International Airport (IAIM) stated that the temporary facilities aim to restore between 80% and 85% of operational capacity by the end of the year. Passengers are advised to follow new protocols, which include bus transfers for boarding and specific security checks by the Bolivarian National Guard.
