International airport passenger trends diverge in Argentina and Mexico
International airport passenger traffic is showing divergent trends across Latin American regions. In Argentina, airports recorded a record 11,691,219 international passengers between January and August, marking the highest figure for that period. Notably, Tucumán saw a 248% increase in international passengers during August. Other Argentine airports showing growth include Rosario (31%), Bariloche (12%), and Mendoza (5%). Additionally, Neuquén and Ushuaia have expanded their international connectivity through direct links to Santiago de Chile and São Paulo.
In contrast, Cancún International Airport in Mexico is experiencing a slowdown. Data from ASUR indicates a 15% drop in international traffic during August, with approximately 1.19 million passengers compared to 1.40 million in the previous year. For the first eight months of 2026, the airport has seen a cumulative loss of over 845,000 international passengers, representing a 6.1% decline in that segment. This downward trend has persisted for six consecutive months, impacting the broader tourism and service sectors in Quintana Roo.
