International Artists Day observed on October 25

International Artists Day is observed on October 25, an informal global initiative established in 2004 by Canadian painter Chris McMurry. The date was chosen to honor the birthday of Pablo Picasso, a central figure in modern art. Unlike the UNESCO-sanctioned World Art Day celebrated on April 15, this observance focuses specifically on the individual artists, their creative work, and their role within society.

The initiative has expanded from a single-day event into the ‘iADx365’ platform, involving artistic communities from Canada, the United States, Spain, India, and Japan. In Skopje, North Macedonia, the Museum of Contemporary Art is highlighting this connection through the exhibition ‘Picasso, the Museum’s Painting,’ featuring works such as his 1963 ‘Head of a Woman.’

Beyond celebration, the day highlights the socio-economic conditions of creators. UNESCO’s 1980 Recommendation for the Status of the Artist encourages states to improve employment conditions, income, social protection, and freedom of expression for artists.
