International Biathlon Union implements new rifle safety rules

The International Biathlon Union (IBU) has announced significant rule changes regarding rifle handling to enhance safety. These new regulations will take effect at the start of the 2026/27 season, beginning with the World Cup opener in Kontiolahti, Finland, on November 26.

Under the updated rulebook, specifically Article 8.5.4, athletes are no longer permitted to adjust their rifles before reaching the shooting mat. Upon arriving at or leaving the shooting range, the rifle strap must be fully positioned over both shoulders with both arms passed through the strap. The rifle may only be removed once the athlete has reached the shooting mat.

When leaving the range, athletes must ensure the rifle is properly secured on their back with the barrel pointing upward and both arms through the strap before they can continue skiing. Failure to comply will require the athlete to stop immediately and correct the position without obstructing or endangering others.
