International calls for divestment from companies linked to Gaza conflict

Amnesty International and other advocates are calling for states to divest from multinational companies allegedly complicit in Israel’s military occupation and actions in Gaza. Following a July 2024 International Court of Justice finding that Israel’s occupation of Palestine is unlawful, calls have intensified for states to refrain from providing unconditional economic, military, or technological aid. Specific companies, including Alphabet, Amazon, Allianz, Hewlett Packard, Airbnb, and Booking.com, have been identified by UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese as being involved in supporting settlement expansion and military activity.

Concurrently, new data regarding the humanitarian situation in Gaza has raised questions about previous famine declarations. A population-based nutrition survey conducted by the Gaza Nutrition Cluster, led by UNICEF, reported acute malnutrition levels among young children between 0.2% and 0.8%. This finding contrasts with previous projections from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) that had warned of widespread catastrophic malnutrition. While acknowledging past nutritional distress and deprivation, the data suggests a significant discrepancy between earlier famine warnings and current measurements following increased humanitarian assistance.
