International Chamber of Commerce reports 30-year low in global piracy
The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) reports that global maritime piracy has reached its lowest level in three decades. During the first nine months of the year, the ICC's London-based reporting office recorded 51 attacks or attempted attacks on ships, which is less than half the number reported during the same period last year.
Authorities attribute this decline to intensified maritime controls and successful law enforcement operations. For instance, the arrest of two criminal groups by Indonesian authorities last year led to a decrease in incidents within the Singapore Strait. Oliver Wieck, Secretary General of ICC Germany, described the trend as a ‘positive signal’ but cautioned that sailors and vessels remain at risk.
Of the 51 targeted vessels, four had connections to Germany, either through ownership or management. While traditional piracy is declining, the ICC notes an increase in military-related threats to commercial shipping. Tensions remain high in the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf, and the Black Sea, where drone attacks and geopolitical conflicts have increased the danger to international trade.
