International Congress of Basic Science opens in Beijing

The 2026 International Congress of Basic Science (ICBS) has opened in Beijing, themed "Advancing Basic Science for Humanity." The two-week event has gathered over 1,000 domestic and international participants, including scientists, researchers, and young scholars.

The congress features more than 500 academic sessions covering diverse branches of basic science and frontier topics such as quantum information, computer vision, human-computer interaction, and generative large-model reasoning. Notable programming includes "Mathematics Night," "Physics Night," and "Engineering Night," featuring Fields Medal and Turing Award recipients. A newly launched Women Scientists Forum will also host discussions on career challenges and opportunities for female researchers.

Specific academic reports are scheduled to cover advancements in mathematics, physics, engineering, materials science, and life sciences. The event is hosted by the Beijing Municipal Government, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the China Association for Science and Technology, and the World Federation of Chinese Mathematicians. Additionally, the congress includes a "Tsinghua Day" for student engagement and tours of Huairou Science City to showcase China's research ecosystem.
