International Cricket Council plans to expand T20 World Cup to 24, then 32 teams

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is assessing a major expansion of the men’s T20 World Cup. Media reports indicate that from the 2032 edition the tournament could feature 24 teams, up from the current 20, with a long‑term aim of reaching 32 nations. The proposal follows the recent increase from 16 to 20 teams for the 2024 event and is intended to broaden cricket’s global footprint and enhance commercial returns, especially for the Indian market, which commands the sport’s largest audience and revenue potential.

The ICC’s long‑range plan also mentions growing the women’s T20 World Cup to 16 sides from 2030. Emerging cricketing nations such as Uganda, Papua New Guinea, Italy, Hong Kong, the United States, Canada, Nepal, Nigeria and Germany could benefit from the larger format, gaining more exposure on the world stage.
